Public Innovation summer program 2025
AI Sweden is now looking for individuals or teams to work with real-world AI challenges for the Swedish civil society and public sector.
Artificial intelligence is transforming society. AI Sweden is the national centre for applied artificial intelligence, jointly funded by the Swedish government and our partners, both public and private. Our mission is to accelerate the use of AI for the benefit of our society, our competitiveness, and for everyone living in Sweden.
We are now seeking motivated and talented individuals to join our Public Innovation summer program 2025 and contribute to our mission.
About the position
This is your chance to play an active role in shaping the program and tackling real-world challenges. The Public Innovation program offers a unique opportunity to engage in a variety of tasks, often in collaboration with other students as part of a team. There are several ideas of potential projects, some described below. Please note that project specifics may evolve based on various factors, including the needs of the projects and partners, emerging technologies, and the unique skills and interests of selected candidates. We are committed to matching applicants with projects where they can make the greatest impact.
Examples of projects or tasks include:
Data readiness: This project focuses on improving public sector AI utility by enhancing data readiness. Developing robust RAG systems, building comprehensive databases, and establishing effective data management practices. This includes documenting best practices from Swedish municipalities.
Effective use of generative AI: This project aims to empower public sector employees to effectively use generative AI. Developing training materials, creating practical use cases, and building specialized AI tools. This includes documenting real-world AI applications and exploring effective prompt design.
Scalability and impact of AI in the public sector: This project focuses on accelerating the widespread adoption of impactful AI solutions within the public sector. It involves mapping the conditions necessary for scaling successful AI implementations across various organizations. Additionally, it aims to identify, document, and promote high-impact use cases that are currently delivering tangible benefits, facilitating their broader application.
Developing AI solutions for non-profits: An extension of the program AI for Impact that ran the summer of 2024, which entails developing and implementing an AI solution for social impact.
Sponsored student teams will engage in projects focused on AI application and innovation for AI Sweden initiatives, partner projects, or other stakeholders. The program spans over ten weeks during the summer (full time, two weeks vacation) with a few days before and after the summer for introductions and presentations.
AI Sweden will provide collaborative working spaces in Stockholm and Gothenburg for the teams, fostering an environment of shared learning and innovation.
The summer program will culminate in a final knowledge sharing event, where students will present their findings, end products and achievements to all parties involved. This event will serve as a platform to share learnings, discuss challenges, and explore future collaborations.
At the core of this program are three fundamental principles that we hold in high regard, as they play a pivotal role in shaping the program's outcomes. Firstly, by ‘Accelerating applied AI in Sweden’, we aim to make a tangible impact on the operations of Swedish non-profits, driving real-world applications of AI technologies. Secondly, our commitment to 'Invest together, share with many' underscores the significance of producing top-notch documentation that can be readily utilized by a wide array of AI Sweden partners, fostering a culture of collaboration and shared knowledge. Lastly, 'Leading with speed and boldness' is not just a phrase but a guiding ethos, encouraging participants to conceive and implement the most original solutions, positioning them as pioneers in the rapidly evolving landscape of AI.
Who can apply
We are looking for master's level students (and might also open up for students on other levels) with a strong interest in AI. This includes those studying computer science, cognitive science, human-centered AI, or related fields such as interaction design, mathematics, statistics, business and management, entrepreneurship, or engineering. We welcome applicants from diverse programs who are passionate about AI and eager to collaborate in creating a dynamic and impactful program.
We value individuals who are:
- Highly motivated and proactive
- Ready to co-create and shape the program
- Eager to develop AI solutions and drive transformation
Examples of roles are
Machine Learning/Deep Learning Engineer: This role focuses on developing and implementing AI models, particularly generative AI and LLMs, and requires strong Python skills and experience with RAG systems.
Data Scientist/Data Analyst: This role involves analyzing and preparing data for AI applications, requiring expertise in data cleaning, visualization, and feature extraction, and contributing to building effective databases.
Software Developer: This role centers on building and deploying AI-driven applications, demanding strong programming skills and familiarity with web or mobile development frameworks and cloud based solutions.
Technical Writer/Content Creator: This role is about creating clear documentation and training materials for AI tools and processes, ensuring knowledge sharing and accessibility for a broad audience.
Project/Process Analyst: This role focuses on mapping organizational processes and identifying successful AI use cases, contributing to the scalability of AI solutions and working with non profits.
Interaction Designer/UX Researcher: This role involves designing user-friendly interfaces for AI tools, emphasizing usability and creating intuitive user experiences.
Candidates will be selected based on team composition (if applying as a team), grades, experience and motivation to participate in the program.
Participants will receive an hourly compensation during the program and are expected to work full time (40 hours per week) during ten weeks, as well as a few days before and after the summer (approximately one week in total).
Fluency in Swedish is a requirement for most projects in the program. Participants must be able to work on-site in Gothenburg or Stockholm during the whole period (June-August).
